Why More Parents Are Proudly Breaking the Old Rules of Raising Kids

From letting children get bored to allowing unlimited screen time, a growing number of parents are openly rejecting what they see as outdated or overly strict parenting norms. These once-taboo opinions are now being shared without apology in online forums and real-life conversations.

One of the most common "unpopular" views is that boredom is actually good for kids. Many parents argue that constant structured activities and adult-led entertainment rob children of the chance to develop creativity, patience, and self-reliance. Letting a child sit with nothing to do, they say, forces them to invent their own fun.

Another stance that raises eyebrows is the acceptance of screen time. While many experts warn about the dangers of tablets and phones, a vocal group of parents believes that technology is simply part of modern life. They argue that banning devices entirely is unrealistic and that kids can learn valuable skills from well-chosen apps and games.

Some parents also defend the right to spank or use physical discipline, a practice that has become deeply controversial. Others openly admit that they do not force their children to share toys, arguing that forcing generosity actually teaches resentment rather than kindness.

There is also a growing pushback against the idea that parents must always be "on." Many now say it is okay to prioritize their own mental health over constant engagement with their kids. They argue that a parent who is burned out and resentful is worse for a child than one who occasionally says "not right now."

These opinions are not about being careless or neglectful. Instead, they reflect a shift toward trusting parental instinct over expert advice and social pressure. For many, the goal is not to be a perfect parent, but a real one.
