The Surprising Parenting Habits That Are Totally Normal Abroad — But Rarely Practiced In The U.S.

The Surprising Parenting Habits That Are Totally Normal Abroad — But Rarely Practiced In The U.S.

For many American parents, the daily grind involves constant hovering, scheduled playdates, and a deep fear of letting a child out of eyesight. But step outside the U.S., and you will find a completely different set of norms that would make many American moms and dads clutch their pearls. One expat living in Japan recently noted that the local approach to raising kids feels almost radical by comparison.

In Japan, it is common to see toddlers running errands alone or taking public transit. Parents trust their communities and the collective responsibility of strangers. In Denmark, children are routinely left sleeping in their strollers outside cafes while their parents enjoy a coffee indoors. The belief is that fresh air is healthier than a stuffy room, and the risk of abduction is statistically negligible. Meanwhile, in many Nordic countries, kids play outside in all weather, often without direct supervision, building resilience and independence.

Contrast this with the American model, which often prioritizes safety over autonomy. The result, according to some observers, is a generation of children who are less capable of handling small risks or boredom. One parent who moved back to the U.S. from Germany described the local parenting style as "over-the-top" and "ridiculous," pointing to the constant over-scheduling and the panic over a scraped knee. While cultural differences are complex, these simple habits abroad suggest that letting go a little might be the best thing for everyone.
