The Math Nobody Writes Down

September 15, 2026 - 11:57

The Math Nobody Writes Down

You have been doing it since before the child could ask for anything. The 2 a.m. feeds, the vaccination schedule memorized without a reminder app, the snack box packed with the one thing he will actually eat. Nobody handed you a trophy. Nobody called your mother-in-law to say how lucky the family is. It was simply expected, the way breathing is expected.

Then the father takes the child to the park for an hour. He sends a photo. The comments arrive like applause. Such a hands-on dad. So involved. What a lucky child. He is doing the same task you did this morning, and will do again tomorrow, without anyone noticing.

This is the arithmetic of praise. A mother's work is the baseline, the default setting, the thing that happens whether or not anyone is watching. A father's work is a bonus, a surprise, a gift that deserves recognition. The bar sits on the floor for him and somewhere near the ceiling for her.

The problem is not that fathers get credit. It is that mothers get silence. Both parents are capable of the same care. Only one of them is treated like a volunteer.
