Parenting experts are offering practical advice for families struggling with children who seem glued to their phones. The goal is not to ban screens entirely but to help kids build a healthier relationship with technology. Here are five strategies that can make a real difference.
First, lead by example. Children often copy what they see. If parents are constantly checking their own phones, it sends a mixed message. Try setting aside specific times when everyone in the house puts their devices away, like during meals or the first hour after school. This creates a shared break from screens.
Second, replace scrolling with real-world activities. Boredom often leads to picking up a phone. Keep a list of offline options handy, such as board games, art supplies, or a simple walk outside. The key is to offer an alternative that feels more engaging than the endless feed.
Third, use screen time limits, but make them a family rule rather than a punishment. Many phones have built-in timers. Explain that the limit is there to protect sleep and focus, not to be controlling. When the timer goes off, the device goes to a central charging station in the living room, not the bedroom.
Fourth, talk about what they are watching. Instead of just asking "how long were you on your phone," ask "what did you watch today?" or "did anything funny or interesting pop up?" This shifts the conversation from time to content. It helps kids think critically about what they consume online.
Finally, do not panic. Experts say that occasional long sessions are normal, especially during school breaks. The real concern is when scrolling replaces sleep, homework, or face-to-face time with friends. If you notice those patterns, step in gently. A calm conversation works better than a sudden ban. The goal is to teach self-control, not to fight a war over the phone.
