25 Adult Behaviors That Can Affect A Child’s Confidence And Emotional Development, According To An Expert

Many adults don't realize how deeply small everyday interactions can affect a child's emotional development. Things that may seem harmless in the moment like dismissing feelings, comparing siblings, or expecting children to "just behave" can sometimes leave a much bigger impact than intended.

To better understand which common behaviors adults often overlook, parenting expert Celia Kibler shared insights into the subtle habits and reactions that can shape a child's confidence. She points out that even well-meaning comments can chip away at a child's sense of self-worth over time.

For example, when adults rush to fix a child's problem instead of letting them struggle a little, it can send the message that they are not capable. Similarly, praising only achievements rather than effort teaches children that their value depends on being perfect. Interrupting a child while they are speaking or finishing their sentences for them can also make them feel unheard and unimportant.

Kibler also warns against using guilt as a tool for discipline. Statements like "You make me so sad when you do that" can create emotional confusion and anxiety. Comparing a child to a sibling or a friend's child may seem like motivation, but it often breeds resentment and self-doubt.

Other behaviors include dismissing fears as silly, forcing physical affection like hugs when the child is unwilling, or using sarcasm that a young child cannot yet understand. Even laughing at a child's mistake when they are already embarrassed can deepen feelings of shame.

Kibler emphasizes that no parent or adult is perfect, and small missteps are not the end of the world. What matters is the overall pattern. Children are resilient, especially when they feel safe and respected. The key is to stay aware of how daily words and actions add up, and to make space for children to express their feelings without judgment. Building confidence is not about never making mistakes, but about consistently showing up with patience and understanding.
