OpenAI builds dedicated ChatGPT experience for teens with parental controls and study features

OpenAI is stepping up its approach to younger users with a new, dedicated ChatGPT experience built specifically for teens. The company says the portal is designed to balance education with safety, adding homework help features, parental controls, and a set of stricter content filters that go beyond the standard model.

The move comes as schools and families increasingly rely on AI tools for studying, but also as concerns grow over what minors might encounter online. The new interface will let parents set quiet hours, limiting when the chatbot can be used, and review conversation summaries to keep tabs on how their kids are interacting with the AI. Those summaries won't expose full chat logs, but they will give a general sense of topics and activity.

For students, the experience leans into practical help. There's a step-by-step math solver, writing feedback, and a mode that encourages critical thinking rather than just handing over answers. OpenAI says the system is trained to recognize when a user is under 13 and will block access entirely, while teens aged 13 to 17 will get the safer version by default.

Content guardrails are also tightened. The model will refuse certain prompts related to self-harm, hate speech, or adult themes, and it will avoid discussing sensitive topics in a way that could be seen as encouraging risky behavior. OpenAI says it worked with child safety experts and educators to shape the rules.

The rollout starts this week in the U.S. and will expand to other countries over the next few months. No word yet on whether the quiet hours feature will be optional or mandatory, but early tests suggest parents will have full control over the settings. For now, the company is framing this as a way to keep AI useful without leaving teens unprotected.
