20 Common Parenting Practices From Different Countries That Might Surprise Americans

Parenting styles vary dramatically across cultures, and many common practices abroad can seem astonishing from an American perspective. From fostering early independence to redefining discipline, these methods challenge conventional norms.

In Japan, for instance, it is standard for very young children to run errands alone, a practice fostering self-reliance that is virtually unheard of in the U.S. In fact, if people overheard an American child completing a similar task, they might call the police for a wellness check. Meanwhile, in countries like France, children are often expected to adhere to strict meal schedules and eat the same sophisticated foods as adults, with snacking heavily discouraged.

Scandinavian nations champion outdoor napping, leaving babies to sleep in prams outside cafes even in chilly weather, believing the fresh air is beneficial. In parts of Latin America, bedtime is a fluid concept, with children commonly staying up late to participate in family gatherings. Other surprising customs include the Kenyan tradition of not making direct eye contact with infants to ward off envy, or the Polish practice of giving toddlers a small taste of beer.

These diverse approaches highlight that there is no single "right" way to raise a child, with each culture embedding its own values into the fabric of family life. What seems unusual in one country is simply tradition in another, offering a broader perspective on childhood development and family dynamics worldwide.
