Harriet Walker thought she was being cultured. She took her baby to see Kenneth Branagh at the Royal Shakespeare Company. It turned out to be a big mistake. The experience left her questioning the unwritten rules of where infants are actually welcome. She has since compiled a guide to the do's and don'ts of taking a baby out in public.
According to Walker, the list of forbidden zones is longer than you might think. The theater is a clear no-go, even for a celebrated actor like Branagh. The quiet, dark space and the audience's expectation of silence make it a hostile environment for a crying child. But the restrictions do not stop there. She points to other surprising locations that are off-limits. For instance, she once breastfed in a Wetherspoons pub. While the chain is often seen as a family-friendly budget option, the act of nursing there drew stares and comments. It seems that even a casual pub is not safe.
Walker argues that the problem is not just about noise or disruption. It is about a societal discomfort with the presence of babies in adult spaces. She notes that many people treat a crying infant as a personal affront rather than a normal part of life. The result is a series of invisible boundaries. You can take a baby to a supermarket or a park. But try to enjoy a play, a nice dinner, or even a quiet drink, and you risk judgment. Her advice is simple: know your audience. If the space is designed for quiet contemplation or expensive meals, leave the baby at home. Otherwise, you might find yourself walking out mid-performance, just like she did.
