UNICEF Calls for Stronger Parenting to Protect the Girl Child

UNICEF Calls for Stronger Parenting to Protect the Girl Child

The United Nations Children's Fund has called on parents and community leaders in Bauchi and Gombe states to embrace positive parenting as a way to end child marriage and secure better futures for girls. The appeal came as the world marked the International Day of the Girl Child, a occasion set aside to highlight the challenges girls face and to push for their rights and wellbeing.

According to the agency, many girls in the two states continue to face early marriage, limited access to education and a lack of protection from harmful practices. It noted that these problems cannot be solved by government alone and that families play a central role in shaping the choices available to young girls.

UNICEF stressed that positive parenting means guiding children with care, keeping them in school and involving them in decisions that affect their lives. It also urged traditional and religious leaders to use their influence to discourage child marriage and to encourage families to value girls the same way they value boys.

The organization further called for greater investment in girls' education, health and skills, saying that when a girl is supported, the benefits spread to her family and the wider community. It asked stakeholders in both states to work together so that every girl can grow up safe, educated and free to pursue her dreams.
