For parents tired of fighting over screen time, a psychologist's advice offers a different starting point: help children notice what their devices are doing to them, not just how long they are on them.
The idea is to shift the conversation away from strict time limits and toward awareness. Instead of asking how many minutes a child has spent scrolling, caregivers can ask what that scrolling left them feeling. Did the app calm them down or wind them up? Did they laugh, or did they compare themselves to someone else until they felt worse? Those questions build a skill that lasts longer than any parental control setting.
The approach treats media use like any other habit worth understanding. Kids learn to spot the moments when a quick check turns into an hour, and they start to recognize which platforms leave them energized and which ones leave them flat. Over time, that awareness becomes a kind of internal compass.
Parents do not have to hand over the phone and hope for the best. They can model the same curiosity about their own habits, talk openly about what they notice, and let children practice making small choices with guidance. The goal is not to ban screens but to raise kids who can read their own reactions and decide for themselves when it is time to put the device down and pick up something else.
