Tony Hadley has opened up about the strange collision of fatherhood and pop stardom, recalling that fans kept throwing their underwear on stage even after he became a dad. The former Spandau Ballet frontman said the attention did not fade when his children arrived, and he learned to balance the chaos of nappies at home with the roar of crowds on world tours.
Reflecting on his upbringing in post-war London, Hadley described a childhood shaped by rationing, modest means and a strong sense of community. He said those early years taught him resilience and gave him a grounding that later helped him handle the pressures of sudden fame. Music became an escape and a route out of ordinary life, though he insisted he never forgot where he came from.
Now known to his family as Papa Tone, the singer spoke warmly about fatherhood and how it changed his priorities. He admitted that touring while raising young children was difficult, and he often missed bedtime routines and school events. Still, he believes the experience made him more disciplined and more appreciative of time at home.
Hadley also touched on the enduring bond with audiences, saying the playful tradition of fans tossing clothing onto the stage remains a fond and slightly awkward memory. He described the ritual as good natured and part of the theatre of live shows, even if it once left him scrambling for a clean shirt before an encore.
Looking back, he framed his life as a series of unlikely turns, from a London childhood to global tours and back to the quieter role of a father. He said he would not trade any of it, though he values the ordinary moments most.
