The holiday season is creeping up, and for parents looking to make the countdown to Christmas extra special, toy advent calendars are the hottest ticket in town. Retailers are already reporting that several popular options, including LEGO, Funko, and Disney themed sets, are selling out faster than expected. If you have your heart set on a specific one, parenting experts suggest you should not wait another week.
The appeal is simple: a daily dose of joy without the pressure of a big gift. "Kids love the ritual of opening a tiny door each morning, and it builds anticipation in a way a wrapped present under the tree just can't match," says child development specialist Dr. Megan Keller. She notes that the best calendars offer a mix of small figures, building pieces, or collectible items that encourage imaginative play rather than just a pile of cheap plastic trinkets.
For younger children, the Disney Princess or Pixar calendars are a safe bet, offering small character figures that are sturdy and easy to hold. LEGO's offering remains a perennial favorite, with mini builds that take just a few minutes to complete, perfect for busy mornings before school. Meanwhile, Funko's Pop! advent calendars have become a cult hit for older kids and even adults, featuring vinyl figures from popular franchises like Marvel, Harry Potter, and Star Wars.
However, the window to grab these at retail price is closing. Supply chain hiccups and higher demand than last year mean that once a specific calendar is gone from a major retailer's website, it is unlikely to come back in stock before December. Resale prices on auction sites are already double or triple the original cost for the most sought-after sets.
Experts recommend setting a budget and a backup plan. If your first choice is sold out, look for alternative themes like animals, dinosaurs, or classic board game characters. The goal is the daily surprise, not the specific brand. Also, check local toy stores and bookshops, which often carry smaller, independent brands that are just as delightful and may not be as widely advertised. Do not sleep on this one, because once December hits, the only thing left will be empty shelves and regret.
