The bar is higher now. We must teach our sons what real courage means in a culture that continues to demean women.
Recent events have renewed a difficult conversation about how young men are raised and what they are taught to value. The problem is not new. For generations, boys have absorbed quiet lessons about status, toughness, and the right to take up space, often at the expense of others. What feels different today is the speed at which casual cruelty travels and the ease with which it finds an audience.
Parents and educators face a harder task than simply telling boys to be kind. Kindness alone does not confront the jokes that normalize degradation, the group chats that reward humiliation, or the everyday comments that treat women as objects rather than people. Real courage means interrupting those moments, even when it costs social standing. It means teaching a boy to speak up when his friends laugh at something cruel, and to understand why silence makes him part of the harm.
That work starts at home. It lives in the conversations adults avoid, in the examples they set, and in the standards they refuse to lower. Raising a good man is not about shielding him from the world. It is about giving him the moral clarity to change it.
