The first day of school can feel like a sudden plunge into cold water for many kids. After weeks of lazy mornings, flexible schedules, and endless free time, the abrupt return to alarms, packed lunches, and structured learning often triggers anxiety and tears. That is why more parenting experts are now recommending a simple but effective strategy: the soft launch.
ABC Parenting Expert Bethany Braun-Silva recently shared this approach with the Mornings at 10 team, explaining that a gradual re-entry can make a world of difference. Instead of treating the first day as a hard deadline, parents can start adjusting routines a week or two beforehand. This means shifting bedtime earlier by fifteen minutes each night, and moving breakfast time to match the school schedule. It also helps to do a few practice runs of the morning routine, including laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before.
Braun-Silva also suggests visiting the school playground or walking the route to the building a few days before classes begin. This helps kids re-familiarize themselves with the environment without the pressure of a full school day. For younger children, reading books about starting school or role-playing the drop-off can ease fears. For older students, a soft launch might simply mean having a calm, open conversation about their worries and setting up a dedicated homework station at home.
The goal is not to over-schedule or add more tasks, but to remove the shock of the transition. By easing into the new rhythm, kids feel more in control and less overwhelmed. Parents can also model calmness, since kids pick up on their stress. A soft launch does not guarantee a perfect first week, but it builds a bridge between summer freedom and school structure, making the crossing smoother for everyone.
