Raising Children in Two Faiths: One Couple's Approach

Marriage was a leap of faith for us. When people ask what religion we're raising our daughters, we say the same thing: both.

That answer often surprises people. Some assume we must have compromised somewhere, that one tradition won out and the other faded into the background. That isn't how it works in our house. Our home holds two calendars, two sets of holidays, and two histories that we teach our children to respect.

I grew up Jewish. My wife grew up Catholic. We did not want to choose one faith and quietly drop the other, because neither of us was willing to erase where we came from. Instead, we built something that belongs to all of us.

Our daughters light candles on Friday nights. They also know the stories of Christmas and Easter. They ask questions, and we answer honestly, even when the answer is that their parents see things differently. We have learned that children can hold more than one idea at once without confusion, as long as the adults around them are not anxious about it.

This path is not always simple. Family members have opinions. Holidays require planning. Some weeks feel crowded with tradition. But our children are growing up with a wide view of faith, and with the understanding that belief can be both personal and shared.

We are not trying to create a perfect system. We are trying to raise kind, curious people who know they are loved by two traditions, not divided by them.
