Some families are making a tough call: sending their children to kindergarten before they are developmentally ready. The reason is not about academic ambition. It is about money. With daycare costs climbing every year, skipping a full year of childcare payments can save a household tens of thousands of dollars.
In many states, children must turn five by a specific fall date to start kindergarten. But more parents are now requesting early entry waivers or simply enrolling their kids as soon as they age out of preschool. The math is simple. Infant and toddler care often costs more than a mortgage payment in some cities. A year of full-time daycare can run between $15,000 and $25,000 depending on the region. Public kindergarten, on the other hand, is free.
Teachers are noticing the shift. They report that some incoming students lack basic social skills, like sharing, following simple instructions, or sitting still for a short story. These children are not behind because of learning disabilities. They are behind because they are simply too young. The pressure on kindergarten classrooms is growing. Educators now spend more time on bathroom training and emotional regulation than on letters and numbers.
The financial strain on families is real. Many parents say they are not trying to rush their child's education. They are just trying to survive the cost of living. But experts warn that starting formal schooling too early can backfire. Kids who struggle socially in kindergarten may develop anxiety or a dislike for school that lasts for years.
There is no easy answer. The root problem is that childcare is too expensive for most families, and public preschool programs are still rare. Until that changes, some parents will keep making the math work the only way they can.
