Jill Smokler, the mother of three who built a massive online community by sharing the messy, unfiltered reality of raising kids, has died. She was 48.
Smokler launched the Scary Mommy blog in 2008, initially as a personal outlet to document the chaos of early motherhood. What started as a whim quickly grew into a digital empire. Her writing stood out for its raw honesty, covering topics like postpartum struggles, sleep deprivation, and the guilt that often comes with parenting. She did not sugarcoat the experience. Instead, she gave a voice to mothers who felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and sometimes just plain bored.
The blog attracted millions of monthly readers. Smokler later expanded the brand into a book, "Confessions of a Scary Mommy," and a popular social media presence. She also built a team of writers who contributed their own stories, creating a space where parents could laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Her family announced her death on social media, asking for privacy during this time. No cause was given. Many readers and fellow writers have since shared memories of how her work made them feel less alone in the trenches of parenthood. Smokler is survived by her three children and her husband.
