Jet Li says he had to stop acting like the 'general' to become a better dad

Jet Li says he had to stop acting like the 'general' to become a better dad

Martial arts legend Jet Li has shared a personal shift in his parenting style, admitting that his old approach of running his household like a military operation was not working. In a recent conversation, the action star revealed that he had to completely drop the "general" mindset to truly bond with his children.

For years, Li said, he approached fatherhood with the same intensity he brought to his film sets and training. He gave orders, expected immediate obedience, and kept an emotional distance, believing that was the best way to raise strong kids. But over time, he realized that this method built walls, not trust.

The change came when he understood that respect cannot be demanded, only earned through genuine connection. Li now advocates for a softer, more patient role. "Become their buddy, become their roommate, become their friend. Then talk to them," he explained. He emphasized that real communication only starts when a child feels safe and heard, not when they are bracing for a lecture or a reprimand.

Li admitted this was not an easy transition for someone used to being in control. It required him to listen more than he spoke and to accept that his children might make different choices than he would. He now sees his job less as a director and more as a supportive presence, someone who is there to guide only when asked.

His comments have struck a chord with many parents who struggle to balance authority with warmth. Li's message is simple: being right is less important than being close. He believes that a strong friendship with your kids, built on mutual respect, ultimately teaches them more than any strict rule ever could.
