Tai Savitri, a 65-year-old from Haryana, has a blunt message for parents: stop mentally torturing your kids. In her view, many mothers and fathers treat their children as extensions of themselves, tracking their every move and using guilt to keep them close. She argues that this approach damages trust and leaves young people feeling trapped.
Savitri, who has spent years advising families in her community, says privacy is not a luxury for children but a basic need. Reading their messages, questioning their friendships, and demanding constant updates teach them that love comes with surveillance. Over time, she warns, children either rebel or withdraw, and the bond that parents wanted to protect weakens.
She also takes aim at emotional manipulation. Phrases that remind children of every sacrifice made for them may win obedience, but they build resentment rather than gratitude. Savitri encourages parents to let their children make their own choices, including mistakes, and to offer guidance without control.
Her advice is simple. Give children room to breathe, speak to them as people rather than possessions, and accept that they will build lives of their own. Parents who respect boundaries, she says, often find their children come back willingly instead of staying away out of duty.
